For Parents
SAT prep shouldn't cost $1,500
or require blind faith.
You want three things: Is it effective? Is it safe? Will my kid actually use it? FinishStrong is designed to answer yes to all three.
The Problem
SAT prep is broken.
Parents spend billions on SAT prep every year. Most of it doesn't work the way families expect it to. Here's why.
Private Tutors
$100-200/hr
The gold standard — when you can afford it. A full SAT prep course runs $1,000 to $5,000. Most families can't sustain this, and even those who can get 10-20 hours total. That's not enough for lasting skill development without daily reinforcement between sessions.
Prep Courses
$500-1,500
One-size-fits-all curriculum that moves at the class's pace, not your child's. High dropout rates because weekly sessions don't build habits. Students who need the most help often fall behind and disengage. The ROI rarely justifies the cost.
Prep Books
$20-50
Passive reading doesn't build skills — retrieval practice does. No adaptive difficulty means students either breeze through easy material or hit a wall. Most students abandon them within a week because there's no feedback, no accountability, and no sense of progress.
Generic Apps
$10-30/mo
Questions loosely aligned to SAT content but not mapped to specific College Board testing points. No adaptive difficulty engine. No mastery tracking. No score prediction grounded in real test data. They feel productive but don't produce measurable results.
Your kid deserves prep that works. Not prep that just exists.
Evidence-Based
What FinishStrong does differently.
Every feature traces to published research. No gimmicks. No hand-waving. Here's what's under the hood.
Same math the SAT uses (IRT)
Item Response Theory is the statistical framework College Board uses to score the SAT. FinishStrong uses the same 3-parameter IRT model to select questions at your child's optimal difficulty — P(correct) ≈ 70%. This is the Zone of Proximal Development: hard enough to learn, easy enough to build confidence.
Real score prediction, updated every session
Using mastery data across 95 SAT skills and equating curves from 8 real test administrations, we predict your child's SAT score and update it after every session. Not 'study more' — an actual number that changes as they improve. The math is the same approach College Board uses to equate scores across test dates.
Confidence calibration (unique to FinishStrong)
Before every question, your child rates their confidence. This trains metacognition — knowing what you know. The Education Endowment Foundation found metacognitive strategies produce +8 months of academic progress per year. No other SAT prep app systematically trains this skill.
Spaced repetition for lasting knowledge
The SM-2 algorithm schedules reviews of each skill at increasing intervals. Instead of cramming and forgetting, skills are reinforced just before they'd fade. Research shows 200%+ retention improvement vs massed practice. Knowledge compounds instead of evaporating.
Strategy coaching on every question
Every question teaches a specific test-taking technique — elimination, backsolving, Desmos graphing, time allocation, reading strategies. 31 named techniques across 6 categories, each backed by research. Your child doesn't just learn what the SAT tests, they learn how to take the SAT efficiently. Each tip is generated by one AI model and verified by a different one.
5-minute daily habit, not weekly marathon
Research shows daily short sessions outperform weekly cramming by 3x for retention (Rohrer & Taylor, 2007). Eight questions per day is short enough to never skip, frequent enough for the spaced repetition engine to work its magic. The best ability is consistency.
Transparency
What you'll see.
FinishStrong doesn't hide progress behind vague percentages. Every metric is visible on your child's dashboard — no separate parent portal needed. Here's what you can look at together:
Predicted SAT Score
Total score (400-1600) plus Reading & Writing and Math breakdowns. Updates after every session as mastery data improves.
Skills Dashboard
95 SAT skills categorized as mastered, proficient, familiar, or not started. You can see exactly where your child is strong and where they need work.
Streak Calendar
A visual record of daily practice consistency. Streaks are the #1 retention mechanic — they make 'did you study today?' a question with a clear answer.
Calibration Insights
"Your child says 'certain' and is right 82% of the time." Tracks how well confidence predicts accuracy — a skill that translates directly to SAT test-taking strategy.
Marathon Track
A visual timeline from today to test day, showing pace and progress. Makes the finish line tangible and motivates consistent effort.
Session History
Every session recorded: questions attempted, accuracy, time spent, XP earned. Full transparency into what your child practiced and how they performed.
These features are visible on your child's dashboard. No hidden data, no separate parent app — sit down together and review progress anytime.
Trust & Safety
Built for kids. Designed for trust.
We built FinishStrong for our own kids. Safety isn't a feature — it's foundational.
No ads. Ever.
Learning environments contaminated by advertising undermine trust and attention. FinishStrong will never show ads.
No data selling. Ever.
Student data is never sold, shared with third parties for marketing, or used for targeted advertising. Full stop.
No targeted advertising.
We don't profile students for ad targeting. The business model is education, not surveillance.
13+ minimum age.
FinishStrong is designed for high school students preparing for the SAT. We don't target younger children.
Social features are opt-in.
Leagues and squads exist for students who want social motivation, but they're never mandatory and never create pressure.
Encouraging tone always.
We normalize struggle and celebrate effort. Wrong answers get supportive explanations, not shame. Three wrong in a row triggers our support mode with easier questions to rebuild confidence.

Common Questions
Parent FAQ
Is this actually free?
Yes. The Daily Challenge is free every day, forever. Core features — adaptive practice, mastery tracking, score prediction — are free. We may add premium features in the future, but the daily habit that drives real results will always be free. No credit card required to start.
Is this a replacement for a tutor?
It's a complement. FinishStrong builds the daily practice habit that tutors can't provide between sessions. Many students use both: a tutor for deep concept work and FinishStrong for daily reinforcement through spaced repetition. The two approaches amplify each other.
How long until I see results?
Most students see measurable improvement within 2 weeks of daily use. The score predictor becomes more accurate with more data, so early sessions focus on calibrating the model. By week 3-4, the adaptive engine is dialed in to your child's specific strengths and weaknesses.
How do you predict SAT scores?
We use the same Item Response Theory (IRT) model that College Board uses, combined with equating curves from 8 real SAT administrations. Your child's mastery probability across 95 skills is fed through these curves to produce a predicted score. It's the same math, simplified and made transparent.
What data do you collect?
Account information (email, display name), usage data (responses, session history, mastery states), and basic device information for a smooth experience. This data is used exclusively to power the learning engine. It is never sold, never shared for marketing, and never used for advertising. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What if my kid doesn't stick with it?
Three mechanics work together: Streaks create daily accountability — missing a day means losing a streak, which is surprisingly motivating. Leagues create optional social motivation from peers. And 5 minutes is low enough to become automatic — lower than the threshold where students talk themselves out of practicing. Research shows habit formation succeeds when the commitment is small enough to never skip.
Getting Started
Four steps. Five minutes.
Let them try today's Daily Challenge
No signup required. Eight questions, five minutes. They'll see the adaptive engine in action and get a taste of confidence calibration. Zero commitment.
Create a free account to save progress
When they're ready to keep going, a free account saves their mastery data, starts tracking their predicted SAT score, and begins building a streak.
Set their SAT test date as the "finish line"
The marathon track activates, showing how many days of practice remain. The engine optimizes session content based on time remaining — more review near the test, more exploration early on.
5 minutes daily — the app handles the rest
The adaptive engine selects the right questions, the spaced repetition engine schedules reviews, and the mastery model tracks progress. All they have to do is show up for 5 minutes.
Let them try it first.
No credit card. No commitment. Just science.
